New Email Sending Limits for Purdue Students

To combat the number of phishing emails, Purdue IT has lowered the email sending limits for student accounts, effective March 13, 2026. This impacts students at Purdue’s locations in West Lafayette and Indianapolis as well as Purdue Fort Wayne and Purdue Northwest. Faculty and staff accounts are currently unchanged. However, Purdue IT may lower their limits from the default Microsoft configuration based on further testing.

Purdue student accounts are now limited to:

  • 200 emails per hour
  • 500 emails per day

When users reach the sending limit, they will receive a bounce-back email from Microsoft Outlook with an error message that reads:

550 5.1.8 Access denied, bad outbound sender
